Find Toter For Sale
A toter is a conventional cab that has been specifically modified for transporting mobile homes. It’s sometimes called a mobile home toter. While some are modified specifically for the purpose of hauling mobile homes, there are other types that look more like conventional semi-trailer tractor. The main difference is that toters have sleeper cabs and longer wheelbases.
Another difference between a toter and a semi-trailer tractor is the way in which the two are coupled. Toters use a special ball coupling that is meant to fit into the tow hitch of a mobile or manufactured home’s tongue. This coupling can also work with a modular home’s transport frame. This is different from a semi-trailer’s coupling. They have what are known as fifth wheel couplings exclusively meant for use with semi-trailers. It is possible for a toter to have both a ball and a fifth wheel hitch. This type is called a hybrid. A ball hitch is usually more appropriate to transporting these homes due to the height restrictions associated with over-the-road hauling. You don’t want to risk hitting power lines or overpasses.
It’s important that toters have extending mirrors. In fact, it’s required. The reason for this is because the homes that these toters haul are quite long. Sections of mobile and modular housing can be anywhere from eight to 18 feet in length, making it difficult to see around them. The extension mirrors on toters can adjust manually, hydraulically, or by electric motor. They’re also quite helpful when navigating narrow roads so that you can see such obstacles as trees, mailboxes, cars, and signs.
