Pierce trucks began in 1913 in Appleton, Wisconsin. The company was named Humphrey & Dudley Pierce. They worked on building truck bodies on the Model-T chassis. In a converted church, they spent hours creating truck bodies for use on nearby farms.
In 1927, the company expanded to join the specialized utility market. Their box trucks were all over Wisconsin delivering goods in the cities. It was 1939 when they created the first of the fire trucks that they became famous for. Pumpers were the most common and featured a chevron design on the rear. It is that design that became a safety decal for all fire and rescue trucks. Even now, you will see the chevron design on modern fire trucks.
After World War II, the company designed its own line of fire apparatus. They worked with a commercial chassis, moving deeper into the commercial vehicle market. In 1959, the company built the first snorkel. A snorkel is a unit with a platform and articulated boom. It revolutionized the fire service by leaps and bounds. By 1969, the company became Pierce Manufacturing.
